Job Summary

Primary duties: conduct investigation and preparation for prosecution of violators of the Georgia Controlled Substance Act (VGCSA) operating at the local, state, and federal level. Conducts criminal investigations of crimes and serious accidents or deaths which may have involved criminal conduct. The incumbent interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects; and assists in obtaining physical evidence, writing reports and testifying in court during the judicial process. Other duties will include supporting inter-agency investigators and other law enforcement investigative teams from the local, state and federal levels.

The Investigator does not normally exercise supervision over other departmental employees, but may occasionally work with/and coordinate investigative efforts of uniformed personnel. The Investigator prepares all appropriate documentation to make arrests and works closely with the District Attorney's Office in prosecuting cases in court.

May be task with other duties within any components of the Special Operations Division (Drug Task Force (J-CAT), Training, Marine Patrol, K9's, School Resource Deputy, "CHAMPS", ERT, Search & Rescue and Cumberland Island.

One year probation.

Complete the CID FTO program within one year of accepting the position (OJT).

Must successfully complete and pass the Agency PFT at 25% (NO EXEMPTIONS).

No adverse disciplinary actions within the past 12 months, and not be on probation.

Complete related work, as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Performs all duties as a criminal investigator.

Responds to crime scenes; create reports about observations and investigative efforts at crime scenes.

Conduct scene recognition, scene documentation and evidence collection/ processing.

Conducts criminal investigations: interviews victims, witnesses, suspects. Prepares reports, takes statements, prepares legal documentation, information, search warrants, etc.;

Investigative activities that constitute Violation of the Georgia Controlled Substance Act and apprehend violators through investigative techniques such as surveillance, overt and covert operations, and execution of search warrants.

Gather and document criminal intelligence through the use of confidential informants, concerned citizens, and anonymous tips.

Maintains liaison with and assists other agencies such as courts, the District Attorney's Office, Social Services, Medical Examiner's Office, and other law enforcement agencies;

Testifies at all hearings, Grand Juries and trials regarding investigation results.

Document, maintain, and prepare administrative records and reports relevant to criminal activities.

Assists road patrol deputies and other law enforcement personnel in investigating crimes and other incidents;

Conducts background investigations for governmental employment, internal affairs, etc.;

Conducts surveillances and undercover work;

Makes arrests;

Attends and conducts advanced training in specialized areas such as Crime Scene Specialist, drug enforcement, homicide, arson, organized crime and sex offenses.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of Federal, State, Local Laws; County Ordinances, Criminal and Traffic Laws, Department Policies and Procedures; good knowledge of the rights and protections provided individuals by the Constitution of the United States as they relate to Georgia Laws; good knowledge of investigative techniques, as well as what documents are available for inspection and what constitutes an illegal invasion of privacy; ability to develop sources of information using discretion in obtaining and releasing information; ability to operate computer, including word processing and other software programs, printer, answering machine, tape recorder, calculator, telephone, copy machine and fax machine, and police radio; ability to use a variety of firearms and less than lethal weapons; integrity; good language and writing skills; good powers of observation and memory.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

About fifty percent (50%) of the time is spent sitting/standing. The employee must possess dexterity to manipulate keys, keyboards, operate control boards and manage multiple tasks. About fifty percent (50%) of the time is spent doing low and medium lifting, low carrying, and low pushing/pulling. Required in unusual or non-routine situations would include kneeling and crouching.

The employee may work in outdoor weather conditions, and may work with explosives when using firearms.

May be exposed to blood borne pathogens.

Education, Experience, and Certification Requirements

High School Diploma

One year of post high school education with course work in accounting, bookkeeping, math, and secretarial science OR one year of police science or closely related course work that includes training in evidence collection/processing, interviewing, general investigations.

One year work experience in an office as a typist, secretary, or related area OR one year work experience in a law enforcement agency as a corrections officer, dispatcher, law enforcement officer or related area.

Certified Peace Officer through the State of Georgia.

Have a minimum of eighteen months uniform field experience; Possess the highest standards of self-discipline

Work well in a team setting

Possess intelligence, maturity, confidence and motivation

Possess the ability to stay focused for long periods of time

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Good oral and written communication skills

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Good basic mathematical skills

REASONING ABILITY

Must have the ability to evaluate situations, based on training/experience and policy/procedures, and make good decisions.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Georgia Driver's License.

Work Schedule

Random schedule is based on 40 hours per week, Days, Nights, Weekends, and Holidays. Schedule is subject to change at a moment's notice to help support the mission.
